Travel

In years past, my wife and I (sometimes together, sometimes just one of us) traveled to France, England, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Croatia, China, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, the Czech Republic, and then some. Most was occasioned by business. I failed to document those trips, so I decided I would not let other, less glamorous trips be similarly dismissed.  So, I started keeping track.  Over time, I plan to construct a list of places we’ve been (road trips, etc.) and when we made the trips.  The intent is to help us (my wife and me) remember when we were where…you know.  What follows are the more recent ones.  Earlier trips will be reconstructed from failing memory when I feel so inclined.

Ajijic and all of Jalisco (October 23-November 3, 2017): Read all about (at least all I wrote about) my visit with my brother and his wife, who live in paradise. You can read about it here and here and here.

Oklahoma and Kansas (July 12-17, 2017): We intended to go further and stay longer, but it was fine in its abbreviated form. You can read all about it here.

Flying to Buy a Texas Truck (July 7-11, 2017): I flew to Dallas to buy back a truck I sold to my friend about three years earlier. I enjoyed time with my friend and his wife and others; it was a great weekend. Until I drove the truck back toward Hot Springs Village. Then it went to hell in a handbasket. You can read a couple of bits about that here and in far more detail here.

Zip Trip to Texas (February 13-15, 2017): Our intent was to go further, stay longer, and see more. You can read what changed our plans and what we did here.

Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and Arles, France (May 28-June 18, 2016): One of these days, I’ll write an extensive blog post about our trip to France. We loved it. In the meantime, here are links to posts I made while there: May 29; May 31; June 9; June 14; June 20 (brief recap)

Bentonville & Rogers, AR (March 22-24, 2016): I wrote just a little about our trip to Bentonville and Rogers, where we visited Crystal Bridges again and enjoyed exploring the area a bit. Details are here.

Dallas/Fort Worth, TX (March 11-14, 2016): We visited friends, found several caches of smoked kippered herring, bought wine, and otherwise had a fabulous time in and around our old digs. Details are here.

New York, NY (July 28-August 4, 2015): We visited friends, met a friend we’d known only electronically previously, and enjoyed a week of wanton decadence in the Big Apple.  Here are the details.

Fort Smith and Bentonville, AR (October 3-November 2, 2014): We visited friends in Fort Smith, who took us to Bentonville to see the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.  Here are details.

Costco Trip to Memphis (July 17, 2014): We just had to get out of town for a bit…and while we were at it, a little Costco shopping spree seemed appropriate.  Here are details.

El Dorado, AR (April 19, 2014): When we awoke, we knew a short road-trip was required.  Sometimes, that just happens.  Here are details.

Little Rock, Dardanelle, and Russellville (April 12-13, 2014):  Though I’m hard-pressed to justify these two jaunts as “trips,” I will classify them as such, nonetheless. These little journeys were reminiscent of the “old days” when we would hit the road on the spur of the moment.  More such unplanned activities will follow.  Here are details.

Second house-viewing trip to Arkansas (January 8-11, 2014): Our second trip to Hot Springs Village, AR (and to Little Rock and Benton) was influenced by weather.  Here are details.

House-viewing trip to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas (November 13-16, 2013):My wife and I took a trip to Hot Springs Village, AR to check it out as a potential retirement spot.  Here are details.

Big Bend and Beyond (October 21-25, 2013): My wife and I took a trip for my birthday.  We drove from Dallas to Big Bend National Park and beyond, then went to Sonora Caverns on our way home.  Here are details.

Trip to Ohio (August 27-September 7, 2013):  My wife and I drove to Ohio to visit my nephew and his wife.  Details of the trip, through Arkansas, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, can be found here.

Central Texas road trip (June 26-28, 2013): My wife and I took a little trip to celebrate her birthday on June 28.  Details of the trip to Central Texas, including Fredericksburg and places near and far, can be found here.

West Texas road trip (May 13-17, 2013): My wife stayed home this trip; I drove my older brother on a trip to west Texas through Del Rio, Marathon, Alpine, Marfa, Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, back through Kerrville and Fredericksberg and to his home in Houston, then headed back home to Dallas.  Details of the trip are here.

Spring Hill, FL road trip (February 10-23, 2013):  Couch-surfed on 2/10 in Jackson, MS with Walter Biggins (who since has moved to Athens, GA), then drove through Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, etc.  Details of the trip are here.

Ajijic and Manzanillo, Mexico (October 4-12, 2012): Flew to Guadalajara, stayed a night in Ajijic, drove to Manzanillo, took day trips to Barra de Navidad, La Manzanilla, etc.  Details on these posts: October 5; October 6; October 7; October 9; October 10;  October 11

New Orleans, LA (September 3-7, 2012): My wife’s sister flew in from Boston; we drove to New Orleans.  Details of the trip are here.

Berkeley and Sacramento and Sausalito, etc., CA (August 7-14, 2012): Visited my sister in Oakland, took Amtrak to Sacramento to visit Robin Chanin and Roger Mack and Tara Crowley, met up with Bob and Susan Seiler, met Kathy Withcats for breakfast, wandered around on BART, had a wonderful time!  I documented all this on Facebook; I need to create a post to document it, though, as I do not trust Facebook to archive it.

West Texas, New Mexico, and Southern Colorado (May 30-June 5, 2012): Drove to New Mexico (south end), then north through Albuquerque to Chama, then Cumbres & Toltec steam train from Chama to Antonito, CO, then back through Texas, including a 2-night stay in Lubbock.  Documented on Facebook, but need to document here.

Galveston, TX and points west (May 10-12): Drove to Galveston, stayed a night or so, then headed to central Texas (Bastrop) for a night or so.  Documented on Facebook, but need to do that here.

Boston, MA and (via Amtrak) Aurora, IL (April 11-22, 2012): Flew to Boston on April 11, then took Amtrak to Aurora on April 16.  Details are on Facebook; I have yet to document them here.
