Billy Preston, the only musician to be credited alongside the Beatles on a Beatles recording, is also credited as the originator of the expression, “if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” There’s an odd mixture of truth and potential pain in that sentiment. Preston gave Stephen Stills permission to use the phrase in Stills’ song, Love the One You’re With. Stills thought the phrase had some resonance; it has survived, so it seems Stills was right.
