Opinions, unlike facts, are not subjects to standards of proof.  Consequently, they can be used as swords or as salve.  But, then, so can facts when misused to “prove” opinions.

    Opinions often stated with assertiveness are then construed as facts and repeated until they take on almost indisputable reality. We see it in politics all too often.
