You Are What You Settle For

If you don’t know, or don’t follow, Brain Pickings, you’re missing out on some truly interesting, thought-provoking, heart-rending pieces of communication.  Founded by Maria Popova, Brain Pickings describes itself as “a human-powered discovery engine for interestingness, a subjective lens on what matters in the world and why, bringing you things you didn’t know you were interested in — until you are.” It’s an apt description.

All of this brings me to the purpose of this post.  Today, I read a piece about Janet Joplin’s final interview with Howard Smith of The Village Voice on September 30, 1970, just four days before her death.  Part of the article incorporated an animated video, crafted around and using a tape of the interview as its “score.” I’m embedding the animated video below. I love Joplin’s attitude…it is so honest and so free of bravado…and especially her words: You are what you settle for.”

I think that Janet Joplin is kind of channeling Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln’s quote is “People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be”….
