Starting

Regardless of your age, the likelihood is very high that you still have time.  Time to do something you have always wanted to do but just haven’t done yet. Time to discover what you really want to do but haven’t yet realized you want.  Time to change yourself, if you choose.

I know this.  But it surprises me, nevertheless, when I read about an octogenarian graduating from college or a 47-year-old starting medical school.  It takes courage to begin something, years after the “normal” starting point, that will call on all of one’s mental or physical stamina.  I admire people who strain the boundaries of normalcy in such ways.

I’ve spent the better part of a year flirting with ideas that I wish I had explored several years ago.  I cannot turn back time, though, so it is pointless to wish.  What I can do is seriously consider whether I have sufficient interest and passion to do more than flirt.  It’s time for me to drag out those dozens of ideas I’ve considered pursuing.  It’s time to decide, for each one, whether it holds interest sufficient to ignite my passion.  And if it does, it’s not too late to start.

  1. Thanks, Bev. You have it exactly right; you’ll be X number of years older X years from now whether you try something new or not! I am now in serious explorer mode!

I’ve read all your recent posts and there are plenty of good thoughts and much wisdom expressed here. I’m very much in agreement about it not being too late to start something new if you have the desire to do so. I always think about how people say they are too old to do such and such because they would be X number of years old by the time they are done. The thing is, you’ll be that old regardless of what you do in three or four years, so may as well do the thing you want to do and at least you’ll have accomplished that by the time those years go by. There really is no time like the present to start something you’ve always thought about doing.

I wish you would tell me what you think about this post...
