Reconnecting After a Long Pause

Yesterday, a couple we have known for 35+ years came to visit.  They were among the very few people we invited to our wedding in Houston, Texas.  In fact, aside from the Unitarian minister and his partner (who also worked with us), they were the only non-family participants.

We have stayed in touch, but only rarely, ever since we moved to Chicago in 1985.  They moved from Houston to Fort Smith, Arkansas several years later.  The last time we saw them was sometime after 1993 when they hosted us in Fort Smith.

We reconnected by phone a couple of months ago and talked about getting together sometime soon. They called several days ago and suggested getting together yesterday; they drove over from Fort Smith and got to our place around 11:00 a.m.

Though we only spent about 5 hours with them, it was a great experience to reconnect.  We sat and talked for a while, then went out to lunch at the Last Chance Cafe, a restaurant on the waterfront at Lake Balboa. Afterward, we took them on a whirlwind tour of Hot Springs Village, including a stop at a scenic overview (with a great view of Lake Lago) and a Realtor’s open house.  In what seemed like a blink of an eye, it was time for them to head back home.  We promised to visit them in the not-too-distant future, spending more time together next time.  And we will.

It’s good to make new connections, but even more appealing to restore old ones.
