I remember reading, quite some time ago, that the ability to forgive is among the most marvelous of traits. I recall reading that good people who followed their “good book” were forgiving people.
As I look around today, I see so many people who profess to believe in a greater power, but who seem to be utterly incapable of forgiving people who might have offended them or done them wrong. Often, these are the same people who make it a point to broadcast their religious beliefs, and who would sooner kill their children than miss a Sunday worship service.
I think on words attributed to Gandhi: “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians.” There is so much “meat” in that sentiment. The concepts behind so many religions, if left to grow untended, would be so beautiful. Instead, they are adulterated and misused to justify behavior only a drunken, cocaine-using mother could love.
Forgiveness. A great, deeply human, trait that’s subject to much conversation but very little practical implementation.
