Black Bread

It’s rare that I am able to eat pumpernickel. My wife does not like it, so I rarely buy it, as I would have to eat the whole loaf myself, which I can do but which is not a good thing to do in one sitting. I have learned through experience that pumpernickel does not age well, not even for a day. It becomes rock hard and dry as dust.

All those reasons notwithstanding, I bought a loaf a few days ago. I sliced it and put the unused slices in the freezer. Today, I took two slices out for my lunch, thawing them quickly in the microwave. And it was good. The image below show the sandwich under construction. Yes, black bread is good, especially when dressed up with thin slices of jalapeńo, tomatoes, and finely sliced strips of sharp cheddar. A bit of grey poupon mustard on the bread, a turn of the peppermill, and some wedges of cucumber and you have a fine lunch.
